Book cover  I liked The Quantum Thief, but I wanted to like it more. As such, it's a very entertaining cyberpunk story, with fancy tech and weapons, with everything quantum, with people living basically forever, but playing the same monkey domination games, heists and falling in love.

It's a fun book, but it's also pulp. Hannu Rajaniemi writes it like in the '90s: passionate people doing things because they are right, great villains, epic technology. I feel like if I would have read it then, it could have been one of my favorites. In 2026, though, it feels a bit tired, a bit paint by numbers. The perfect thief, the perfect opportunity, beautiful strong women everywhere falling for him, cataclysmic battles thwarted by a series of McGuffins...

Bottom line: if you want something fun that feels like cyberpunk, you're going to love this. If you are looking for something smarter... Meh.
